Invisible Orthodontics in Palma de Mallorca

Treatments to ensure healthy teeth and gums in babies, children and adolescents.

Invisalign Treatment

Orthodontics, especially in adults, is becoming more and more common. When its use began to become more widespread in adults, more aesthetic orthodontics also began to appear for those people who preferred to opt for imperceptible systems when correcting the position and bite of their teeth.

Many patients used to opt for lingual orthodontics or aesthetic braces that mimicked the colour of their teeth. However, these systems still brought with them the discomfort of wearing these types of braces, until Invisalign invisible aligners came along.

What is invisible braces with Invisalign?

The Invisalign system is an orthodontic technique that uses clear aligners that allow teeth to be positioned correctly without causing pain or injury to the soft tissues. Invisalign is currently the best option in orthodontic treatment for patients who do not want braces or other traditional systems.

In addition to being an invisible orthodontic, these aligners are completely removable and can be taken out to eat and clean the teeth. This makes orthodontic care easier for the patient than with other treatments. In addition, it is a system especially indicated for patients with periodontal problems.

Phases of orthodontic treatment with Invisalign

The Invisalign orthodontic system involves the use of invisible aligners. Every two weeks the aligner is replaced with a new one, thus gradually correcting the position of the teeth until they are straightened and positioned correctly. The total treatment time depends on each patient, although the average duration is 9 to 15 months and consists of the following stages:

    Diagnosis and study

The first step is to carry out a comprehensive orthodontic study to identify the problem of malocclusion and dental malposition. This study rules out the need for orthognathic surgery and creates a personalised treatment plan. In Invisalign, technology plays a crucial role in this phase, using advanced imaging and software to plan the necessary tooth movements.

Measurements and manufacture of the aligners

For mild dental malpositions, with a duration of approximately 8 months.

Virtual samples are taken from the patient’s mouth using a 3D scanner, thus avoiding the traditional methods of moulds and pastes. These samples are sent to the Invisalign laboratory, where the custom-made aligners are fabricated. ClinCheck software allows treatment progress to be predicted and each brace to be designed with precision.

    Aligner changes

For complex cases, with a duration of 12 to 36 months.

Once the aligners have been made, the patient must wear them for at least 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat and perform daily oral hygiene. At each dental check-up, a new set of aligners will be provided and changed every two weeks. Attachments, small composite reliefs on the teeth, may be placed to improve grip and guide movement.

    Retention

Designed for teenagers, lasting 14 to 24 months.

After completing Invisalign treatment, retainers must be worn to ensure that the teeth maintain their new position. There are two types of retainers:

    • Fixed Retainers: These are small sheets of braided wire cemented to the inside of the teeth, very comfortable and do not interfere with speech.
    • Removable Retainers: These are clear splints similar to Invisalign aligners, worn mainly at night and changed every five years.

These retainers are essential to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original position, ensuring the long-term results of Invisalign treatment.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Invisalign

The Invisalign system is suitable for adults as well as children and adolescents, as the aligners or splints are custom-made for each patient and have no side effects or contraindications. These aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, which is why the patient’s commitment is necessary for the treatment to be a success. It is ideal for treating problems such as:

    • Cross or open bite
    • Interdental spaces
    • Crooked teeth
    • Dental crowding

No, clear aligners do not hinder speech. However, it is worth mentioning that all orthodontic treatment has an initial adaptation period in which the patient has to get used to their orthodontics. It is possible to experience a strange sensation on the first day, but every patient quickly gets used to wearing them, especially in the case of invisible orthodontics which do not generate friction as brackets do.

It is important to remember that this treatment is effective as long as the patient commits to wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours a day. The optimal evolution in the alignment of the teeth depends on this and, for this reason, it is necessary to be involved in their correct use so as not to affect the result and duration of the treatment.

Unlike orthodontic treatments using brackets, with Invisalign aligners there is no food that should not be eaten, as long as the aligners are removed at mealtimes.

On the other hand, although they should not be removed when drinking water, it is advisable to do so with coloured drinks (cola, red wine, coffee…) that could potentially stain the clear aligners.

Yes, as long as the periodontal disease is under control and the patient is undergoing treatment, it is possible to resort to clear orthodontics. In fact, more specifically, Invisalign aligners exert less force than braces, so the gums suffer less in the process. However, it is advisable to consult your orthodontist who will be able to make the best personalised treatment plan.

Yes, there are no contraindications to the use of clear aligners in patients with bruxism. Since they are similar in application to bite splints, they would not aggravate the problem. However, it is important for the orthodontist to know if you are a bruxer as it may have implications for treatment.
