What is lip treatment?
Lip contouring and augmentation treatment is performed by infiltrating hyaluronic acid, a biocompatible filler material that adds extra hydration. Unlike other types of non-resorbable fillers, hyaluronic acid achieves a natural and proportionate result.
It can be used to treat lips that have lost volume over time, lips with an aged appearance, or lips that have lost their profile or contour definition. It is also possible to improve the appearance of small, chapped and asymmetrical lips. In addition, this material helps to improve the appearance of expression lines on the upper lip, as well as to reduce the gummy smile.
On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that this technique is not permanent, but consists of an intradermal treatment that, over time, is absorbed by the body. This allows us to have total control over the results and achieve more defined and natural lips, providing not only volume but also symmetry, hydration and juiciness.
Lip contouring and augmentation is performed under local anaesthesia, making it a completely painless and safe treatment. The results are immediate and, depending on each person, last between 6 and 12 months, longer if it is only at the contour level. Once the material is reabsorbed and the treatment can be performed again.
How is lip augmentation performed?
Before the intervention, the medical-aesthetic specialist must carry out some studies of the facial anatomy to determine the best way to give volume, correct and outline the lips. In any case, the specialist will always recommend an augmentation that respects the shape of the lip, in order to achieve the most natural appearance possible, while at the same time harmonising with the rest of the facial features. The idea is to give projection and improve the structure of the lip to make them fuller and more hydrated without the result being too noticeable.
To do this, on the day of the intervention, the specialist performs superficial microinjections on the lip at a very superficial level, inserting the filler at strategic points to achieve the agreed result. Although it is not necessary to use anaesthesia, the application of anaesthetic cream can be requested to mitigate the effects of the punctures which, on the other hand, only cause discomfort. It all depends on pain tolerance.
It is normal to experience slight swelling in the area that can last up to 36 hours after the injections. In some cases a small bruise may appear after the treatment, which will disappear completely. It is also worth mentioning that this treatment is completely reversible, the filler material can be removed, or, when it is reabsorbed, the lips return to their previous state, although the lip mucosa tends to be better hydrated and the contour more marked thanks to the stimulation of collagen.
What are the advantages of lip contouring and augmentation?
- It is a medical-aesthetic treatment, so it is minimally invasive, as well as quick and simple, in fact it can be performed in a single session.
- It is practically painless, as it is a non-surgical treatment with a small injection and does not require subsequent recovery.
- Hyaluronic acid is a biocompatible and resorbable material that is completely safe, in fact it is used in topical creams and serums that improve the skin.
- It allows the stimulation of the collagen necessary for the skin, including that of the lips, to remain protected against the external agents that cause ageing.
- Once the most visual effects of the filler have worn off, the treatment can be repeated regularly. Several studies have shown that it lasts longer and longer.
