    What is oral rehabilitation?

Oral rehabilitation is based on a combination of odontological techniques to provide a personalised solution for those patients who suffer from severe oral health problems and need a multidisciplinary approach to recover an optimal smile on a functional and aesthetic level. Since each case is unique, our team of dentists will define which treatments are necessary for the reconstruction or complete rehabilitation of the patient’s teeth.

    Why opt for oral rehabilitation?

When a patient suffers from tooth loss, deterioration in previous prostheses, periodontitis and/or dental malocclusion there is a major oral health problem that needs multidisciplinary treatment to restore the health of teeth and gums and avoid the impact this can have on the appearance of the face and the functionality of the teeth.

An oral rehabilitation treatment can cover the different needs of a patient suffering from multiple oral problems. This involves, depending on each case, resorting to implantology treatments, dental veneers, orthodontics or oral surgery, among others. For this reason, oral rehabilitation consists of a completely personalised treatment that is defined according to the case presented by each patient.

More specifically, this may be the case for patients who require large fixed implants or complete dental implants, fixed dental bridges, or patients who require rehabilitation on old deteriorated implants and who additionally need to treat periodontal disease or correct the positioning of their teeth, etc.

What are the advantages of oral rehabilitation?

    1. Improved quality of life
The treatment restores health to a fundamental area: the mouth. This improves the patient’s quality of life as they no longer suffer pain or even embarrassment.

    2. Restores the teeth
Thanks to this type of restoration, the functionality of the teeth is especially restored, allowing the patient to articulate sounds and chew optimally.

    3. Improves the bite
The alignment of the teeth is also restored so that unnecessary displacement and pressure on the gums supporting the teeth is avoided.

    4. Improved aesthetics
Thanks to technology, it is possible to achieve a natural smile that is harmonious with the rest of the facial features. The result is completely aesthetic.

What are the phases of oral rehabilitation treatment?

The phases of oral rehabilitation treatment depend on the individual case of each patient. Therefore, a specialised dentistry team will study the results of the patient’s diagnosis in depth in order to create a personalised treatment plan to rehabilitate the functionality and aesthetics of the teeth. This plan will define the phases to be followed by each patient, which may be as follows:

    1. Diagnostic phase

At the patient’s first visit, the dentist will perform the tests and x-rays necessary for the diagnostic process. The speed of obtaining this assessment will depend on the complexity of each case. If the specialist reaches a specific diagnosis at the patient’s first visit, the patient will be informed of the treatment to be carried out.

In more complex cases, the dentist would need to review the patient’s previous records for a confident definition of the treatment plan and procedures to be performed for oral rehabilitation. The specialist would explain the results of his investigation to the patient in a second visit.

    2. Sanitation phase.

In this phase, the aim is to sanitise and eliminate possible infections in teeth and gums caused by bacterial plaque. In this way, part of the oral health is restored. The types of treatments to be carried out depend on the patient’s needs. These include professional cleaning or periodontal treatment, fillings, endodontic treatments or extractions of hopeless teeth, etc. The patient’s dentist will be the one to define the treatment to follow according to the disinfection and sanitisation needs.

    3. Orthodontic phase.

If necessary, the orthodontic phase has the task of offering the patient orthodontic treatment adjusted to their case, if recommended by the dentist in charge of the case. The specialist will call in the orthodontist after the hygienic phase and will detail the steps to be followed in this multidisciplinary process of dental rehabilitation.

    4. Surgical and restorative phase

The orthodontist will be responsible for indicating to the dentist in charge of the case the ideal moment to begin this phase in which surgical processes such as bone regeneration, tissue grafts and the placement of prostheses on teeth, dental implants required by the patient, or even dental veneers, etc. will be carried out.

    5. Control phase.

After fitting the prostheses required in the restorative phase, a phase of treatment stability over time begins. The dentist will propose a plan of maintenance visits in which the team will be responsible for sanitising the prostheses and teeth. As well as making the appropriate adjustments to the oral rehabilitation and detecting any problems that may arise as quickly as possible.

Frequently asked questions about dental rehabilitation

Oral rehabilitation is especially indicated for those who suffer from different oral problems such as caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, tooth eruption, bleeding gums, as well as a lack of aesthetics in the maxillofacial region, so that they need to recover their oral health and improve the general appearance of the area.

Our team of specialists uses techniques such as anaesthesia and conscious sedation to ensure that patients do not suffer pain or even anxiety at any stage of their personalised treatment. Occasional discomfort can always be mitigated with painkillers recommended by dentists.

Since this is a customised treatment plan, each patient’s experience may be completely different. Each procedure may vary depending on the severity of the condition of the teeth and gums. But it should always be remembered that although it is a complex treatment, it is very effective and improves the patient’s quality of life.

The patient should follow the instructions of the specialist after treatment, especially with regard to oral hygiene and regular check-ups. Care may have to be taken with certain foods, but this will depend on the dentist’s recommendations.
