What is periodontics?
Periodontics is the dental speciality that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all those structures that support and hold the tooth, i.e. the gum (the periodontium), the periodontal ligament and the bone. These tissues can be affected by certain pathologies known as periodontal diseases.
The appearance of these gum diseases is mainly due to the accumulation of bacteria and food debris on the gums that are not properly removed by ordinary brushing. On the other hand, genetics also plays an important role, as there are a series of genes that increase the probability of suffering from these problems.
Techniques applied in periodontal treatment
Depending on the severity of the periodontal disease, a number of techniques can be used in the treatment plan. Periodontics has the following treatments to ensure healthy gums:
What does periodontal treatment look like?
Since the treatment depends on the state of the gums, we must first carry out an initial study using 3D technology and a special probe to assess the state of the teeth, gums and bone and establish the best plan of action to restore periodontal health.
In the case of gingivitis, gum treatment continues with a prophylaxis or professional tooth cleaning to effectively and thoroughly remove accumulated tartar. It is possible to prescribe a mouthwash with chlorhexidine adjuvant for a limited period of time to reduce inflammation, but the most important thing in these cases is to maintain good dental hygiene at home following the specialist’s recommendations.
In the case of periodontitis, a periodontal scaling technique is necessary to remove tartar and bacteria in the periodontal pockets. In most cases, this phase solves the problem: the gum is deflated and the bone is maintained, and once the treatment is finished, the maintenance phase can be applied. However, if scaling is not sufficient, periodontal surgery is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions about Periodontics
Depending on the severity of the disease, i.e. the advanced stage of the gum infection, we consider:
- Gingivitis: this is the superficial inflammation of the gum. Its main warning sign is bleeding and inflammation. It should be treated with a thorough professional oral cleaning. And if not treated in time, this problem can develop into periodontitis.
- Periodontitis or pyorrhoea: This is the deepest inflammation of the gum and the tissues that support the tooth. It is treated by dental scaling and joint smoothing; and it is very important to treat periodontitis to prevent tooth loss.
The most common symptoms of periodontal diseases are:
- Spontaneous gum bleeding or bleeding during brushing.
- Redness and/or swelling of the gums.
- Gum recession (exposure of the roots of the teeth).
- Bad breath and bad taste in the mouth.
- Dental mobility in advanced cases.
