A dental implant lasts forever… if you take care of it.
A dental implant can last a lifetime, but only if it is properly cared for, and even then there are uncontrollable factors that can cause the implant to be lost.
It must be understood that the implant is an artificial material introduced into the patient’s bone and with which it will interact for the rest of the patient’s life. The variables that affect the bone can vary the stability of the implant.
Despite this, there are always a series of recommendations that we give to our Clinicas Udemax patients to ensure that the useful life of the implant lasts a long time.
Recommendations to follow at home:
Identify the implants in your mouth. We must be aware of where they are in order to dedicate more hygiene and attention to them.
- Regularly perform proper dental and implant hygiene: at least twice a day. Implants should be cared for and hygienised just as much as, if not more than, natural teeth.
- Avoid and control risk factors (e.g. smoking multiplies the risk of implant failure).
- Perform twice a year a proper maintenance treatment of teeth and implants with your hygienist or dentist.
- Use sleep splints to prevent fracture or reduce wear of the porcelain material of the crown that goes over the implant.
Prevention of peri-implantitis starts at home.
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process that affects the tissues surrounding a dental implant, leading to loss of the supporting bone.
Forty percent of implants may suffer from superficial inflammation of the gums, and approximately 20% of patients may suffer bone loss and develop peri-implantitis. The best prescription is prevention.
