What is corrective orthodontics?
Corrective, complete or second stage orthodontics is a type of treatment that is applied from the age of 12 when, in principle, the permanent teeth have erupted and there are no temporary teeth left (milk teeth). The main objective of this type of orthodontics is to improve the function, biology and aesthetics of the teeth.
Unlike interceptive orthodontics which is applied before, when the bones are developing, and is responsible for improving the bite so that the permanent teeth erupt correctly, corrective orthodontics has the main focus on the correct alignment and levelling of the teeth.
Corrective orthodontics will not only help to make the adolescent’s smile more beautiful, but will also facilitate chewing function. The ultimate goal is to reach adulthood with the proper support of teeth, bones and gums and, together with good hygiene habits and check-ups, to maintain optimal oral health for a long time.
What is corrective orthodontic treatment like?
Prevention through regular check-ups and professional oral cleanings that supplement good oral hygiene at home will always be the best treatment. However, should periodontal disease occur, early diagnosis is essential. Once the problem has been diagnosed, treatment will consist of eliminating the micro-organisms causing the infection depending on the severity.
How does corrective orthodontics help your child?
As we have mentioned, corrective orthodontic treatment in adolescents makes it possible to improve occlusion and dental position in a simpler way, without biological limitations that lengthen (although they do not make it impossible) treatment in adults. This allows:
- Achieve correct alignment of the permanent teeth, improving masticatory functionality.
- Improve the bite to avoid unnecessary wear and tear and even the appearance of other oral diseases.
- Improve oral hygiene with brushing and interproximal flossing to maintain good oral health.
