What are dental implants in a day?
One-day dental implants allow the placement of the implant and a provisional prosthesis in a single intervention, offering the patient the restoration of their smile in 24 hours. Although the prosthesis is temporary, it is replaced by a definitive one once osseointegration is complete.
Requirements for dental implants in one day
As we have already mentioned, one-day dental implants can only be offered in cases where the patient has a series of optimal oral and dental conditions. Therefore, it is essential to carry out an accurate diagnosis (by means of a clinical and topographical study) and a suitable treatment plan that takes into account the following conditions:
- Previous health problems. In order to apply the dental implant technique in one day, the patient must be in good systemic health, must not be a smoker and, in addition, must have excellent oral hygiene.
- Infection problems. If the cause of the tooth loss is due to infection or periodontal disease, it cannot be performed, so the source of infection must first be controlled.
- Condition of the jaw bone. The support or base on which the implant is carried out is the maxillary bone and this must not suffer from bone resorption, that is to say, it must have adequate volume to carry out the dental implant technique in one day.
- Condition of the gums. Similarly, the gums must be in optimum condition and not present problems such as gingival recession, otherwise the implant would be exposed.
- Correct occlusion. Although the occlusion does not have to be perfect, this technique is not recommended when the occlusion is not stable, i.e. when there is a serious bite problem.
- Entry torque. This refers to the entry of the implant into the bone, the force of which must be greater than 30 Newtons to be able to place the provisional prosthesis on the same day.
Postoperative and recovery time for dental implants in one day.
After the operation, it is normal to experience swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with anti-inflammatories. It is crucial to follow the specialist’s recommendations to speed up recovery:
- Take prescribed medication and apply ice to the treated area.
- Drink liquids and avoid chewing for a few hours after the operation.
- Follow a light, warm diet as recommended.
- Maintain good oral hygiene and avoid foods with a high sugar content.
