Do you feel pins and needles in your teeth?

Dientes sensibles

Have you ever had a cold sensation in a tooth? Have you ever felt the prick when you feel a cold or hot liquid or food?

It is probably tooth sensitivity. There are many causes that can provoke such pain in people with sensitive teeth.

Some of them depend on us and others do not, but the most frequent are the following:

  • Tooth decay
  • Cracked teeth
  • Worn fillings
  • Gum disease
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Exposed tooth roots

Here we explain why we get to feel sensitivity in our teeth, such an annoying and unpleasant sensation.

In healthy teeth, there is a layer of enamel to protect the crown of the tooth, the part above the gum line. Below the gum line, a layer called cementum protects the root of the tooth. Under the enamel and cementum is dentine.

Dentine is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains small hollow tubes or canals. What happens when dentine loses its protective covering? Well, these tubes called tubules allow heat, cold, acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentine can also become exposed when the gum is removed.

Many people are sensitive to hot, cold, hot, cold or sweet and sour foods and drinks.

But don’t worry, this condition can be treated in different ways. Moreover, your dentist will tell you how to treat it in your particular case:

  • A desensitising toothpaste
  • A crown or filling
  • Fluoride gel
  • A root canal

In addition to all these procedures, a complete and proper oral hygiene is essential to avoid pain.
