    What are metal brackets?

Metal brackets are the most traditional orthodontic technique, i.e. the one that has been used for the longest time and is still in great demand today as a treatment for children and adolescents. This technique consists of cementing attachments to the visible side of the teeth, joined by means of an arch that is fixed by means of metal or rubber bands (available in a wide variety of colours).

The aim of treatment with metal brackets is to move the teeth into the correct functional and aesthetic position. In other words, to improve chewing, oral hygiene as well as to achieve a more harmonious and aesthetic smile. Thanks to the manipulation of the arch and the ligatures we have mentioned, the orthodontist can guide the dental movements necessary to correct problems such as:

It is worth mentioning that these brackets require specific care. The orthodontist will make recommendations regarding diet (to avoid hard foods that can cause breakage or sticky foods that make cleaning difficult). With regard to oral hygiene, it will be advisable to brush your teeth after every meal to avoid food remains remaining between the metal brackets for a long time, increasing the probability of suffering from oral disease such as caries, gingivitis or periodontitis.

What are the advantages of metal brackets?

    1. They are more resistant: they are a very effective orthodontic treatment that offers great resistance compared to other aesthetic treatments such as transparent brackets made with sapphire.
    2. They are cheaper: since it is the most consolidated traditional treatment, it is also the cheapest, especially when compared to more aesthetic orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign Teen.
    3. They are more creative: despite being more visible than other treatments, thanks to the wide variety of colours available in the bands, young patients who use them can be creative and choose how they want them.

What is treatment with metal brackets like?

    1. Diagnostic phase

In which the orthodontist carries out a study with diagnostic tests including the use of cephalometry and 3D scans to help draw up a treatment plan to correct the malocclusion and/or malposition problem presented by the child or young person.

    2. Placement phase

Using the indirect cementing technique, impressions of the mouth are made to generate moulds on which these brackets are placed. Subsequently, and thanks to 3D radiography, a transfer splint is made to carry out the cementing in the shortest possible time. When the patient comes to the clinic, we prepare the surface of the tooth to proceed with the bonding of the brackets using this transfer splint.

    3. Treatment phase

In which, generally, problems related to alignment and levelling of the teeth will begin to be treated in order to proceed with bite correction, molar relationship and space closure. At scheduled check-ups, the specialist will review the progress of the treatment and guide the micro-movements by manipulation of the arch and ligatures. The use of rubber bands or intermaxillary elastics is also possible.

    4. Retention phase

As in any orthodontic treatment, it will be necessary to place dental retainers to prevent the teeth from moving again, as they have a 'memory'. Thanks to the retainers, the result can be guaranteed indefinitely.
