Oral and maxillofacial surgery in Mallorca

Healthy gums are essential to keep our teeth and oral health, through proper hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.

Treating oral health and jaw problems

In order to keep the health of our mouth in the best possible condition, it is necessary to take into account the well-being of our teeth and gums, preventing the onset of diseases and treating them as early as possible. To this end, minimally invasive, conservative oral surgery must sometimes be carried out as part of the treatment.

On the other hand, to avoid the appearance of discomfort in the temporomandibular joint, as well as to correct and improve the bite and functionality of the teeth in adults, it is also sometimes necessary to resort to a type of maxillofacial surgery together with orthodontic treatment.

In general terms, oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery are used in dentistry to surgically treat diseases and defects in both teeth and gums and are carried out under anaesthesia and conscious sedation for those patients who feel greater stress during this type of intervention.

What are oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery?

Minor oral surgery is a speciality of dentistry that aims to treat both oral diseases and defects in teeth and gums that may affect the aesthetics and integrity of the oral area.

Maxillofacial surgery is the medical-surgical speciality that deals with the study, prevention and treatment of problems or diseases affecting the structures of the face, skull, head and neck, as well as the oral cavity and jaws.

At Udemax Clinics we have a team of maxillofacial surgeons who, together with our dentists and orthodontists, work to provide solutions to all problems in the teeth, gums, jaws and jaw.

Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in Mallorca:

    Surgical types in dentistry

As mentioned above, there are several surgical procedures applied in the different branches of dentistry. They can constitute a treatment in their own right, as in the case of endodontics, or they can be another technique within a multidisciplinary treatment, either to: rehabilitate the oral area, treat caries and other conditions; enable the placement of dental implants; carry out periodontal treatment; or carry out effective orthodontic treatment.

Some adults may suffer from jaw and maxillary malformations and malpositioning problems for which the corrective solution combines orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.

Wisdom teeth, being the last ones, do not always erupt in the right position affecting the integrity of the rest of the dentition, so it is recommended to extract them.

Sometimes, as a last resort, it is necessary to extract a tooth, either due to lack of treatment for caries or severe periodontitis, or due to a fracture.

What are oral surgery treatments like?

    1. Diagnostic phase

In this phase the specialist carries out an initial study and assessment with X-rays, photographs and 3D scanner. The type of technology we use allows us to make a precise diagnosis in order to draw up a personalised treatment plan with the aim of treating the problem presented by the patient.

    2. Treatment phase.

Depending on each diagnosis and treatment plan, this phase will be different. In cases where the surgical intervention has a conservative or restorative function, the treatment can be carried out in a few sessions, either in procedures where caries is removed or gum defects are treated or corrected.

In cases where dental implantology must be used to treat the patient, it will be necessary to take into account a process of osseointegration of the implant depending on the patient’s capacity for recovery. The duration of treatment will also depend on the complexity of each case and whether it is a complete oral rehabilitation.

On the other hand, there are minor and maxillofacial surgeries that complement orthodontic treatment in adults with dental malocclusion (class II or class III) in which orthodontics is not enough to correct the problem, which is not only aesthetic, but also involves a functional problem for the maxilla and mandible.

    3. Postoperative and maintenance.

Depending on each type of surgery, the postoperative period and maintenance will be different. In each case, it is advisable to follow the specialist’s instructions to ensure the success of the treatment. For more information, below we detail the types of surgery that can be performed as part of dental treatment.
