The relationship between migraine and the mouth
Is the mouth responsible for migraine?
Migraine is a sharp pain that usually affects half of the head, with a throbbing quality, accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and intolerance to light, noise and any exercise, which is why the patient tends to go to bed in the dark.
At Clinicas Udemax, we have a lot of experience in joint problems that can cause headaches and migraines. They manifest themselves in attacks lasting between 4 and 72 hours, and may or may not be preceded by an aura. Alterations in vision or aura herald its arrival. The aura occurs in both eyes, and may produce blurred vision, eye pain, and/or spots of temporary blindness.
Other accompanying symptoms may include trouble concentrating, neck pain, back pain, numbness, tingling, fatigue or tiredness. It affects 50-60% of males and 95% of females will suffer from headache on at least one occasion.
When can we suspect that migraine is caused by the mouth?
The first pathology to rule out in the presence of migraine is the mouth. Our specialists at Clinicas Udemax can observe in the mouth, small alterations in one or more of the elements of which it is composed: teeth, muscles and temporomandibular joint. Any small irregularity of the teeth, or of the functions, produces changes in the contractions of the muscles directly or indirectly involved in the movements and functions of the mouth.
The muscles of the mouth that originate in the head, neck, tongue, throat, back, contract continuously in the face of any interference from the mouth, and from life, generating tensions that are very often manifested by pain in the head.
The head is one of the places where the muscles of the mouth originate, and their continuous and incorrect contraction is responsible for the pain that exists in migraines, due to muscular contracture or vascular compression, to describe some of the reasons.
The basic functions of the mouth as muscle balancer and posture
Vital functions such as swallowing and chewing, as well as breathing, are carried out in the mouth and must be correct, balanced and with as little energy expenditure as possible, so that the body is in balance and the patient enjoys good health. All the muscles of the mouth attach to a bone in the head. All teeth are equally important, and each of them has specific and irreplaceable functions. The teeth of the upper and lower arches should never touch, except when swallowing saliva.
It is easy to understand that for the correct development of the body’s functions, there must be total integrity of the different organs and apparatuses needed to carry them out. In the mouth these parameters must be fulfilled to the letter, as it is a complex apparatus, and has basic functions, but which are repeated without rest, 24 hours a day. Any small imbalance in the number, size and shape of the teeth generates a muscular and postural problem that is difficult to diagnose, as the symptom is far from the place where the cause lies.
The cause is in the mouth and the symptom in any part of the body, for example in the head, generating a migraine.
