Why are we afraid of the dentist?

udemax

Fear is a feeling that can rarely be controlled but many times it can be ‘trained’/’stimulated’.

A study says that between 10 and 15% of the population feels fear or anxiety when they know they have to go to the dentist and this, as we know well in the Clinicas Udemax, can lead to cancelled and postponed appointments and that our mouth is the victim of this situation, as our oral health will end up suffering.

This fear usually stems from traumatic experiences. At least two thirds of people who suffer from fear of the dentist recognise that the origin of this apprehension lies in childhood and adolescence as a consequence of a dramatic experience. In addition, there are also cases of people who admit to never having been afraid and years later have developed the phobia during the course of treatment.

An important role in overcoming fear is played by the dentist. He or she must learn communication techniques and maintain a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, encouraging sincerity and understanding. He or she should also bear in mind that each person has a different perception of pain. It is important to create a family atmosphere in which regular visits to the dentist and a positive attitude towards dental care are encouraged in order to prevent dental phobia from developing in children. It is necessary to make a visit to the dentist a normal part of everyday life.

When it comes to overcoming fear, it is important to follow a series of tips:

  • Inform yourself about the process to be carried out.
  • Make an appointment on days when you are not going to be stressed for other reasons.
  • Listen to the background music and close your eyes.
  • Ask questions if you have any doubts.
  • And, above all, see your dentist as someone close to you, an expert in the field and who wants the best for you.
