Why do teeth become stained?

We all know that horrible feeling of looking in the mirror and, when you look at your teeth, discovering a stain on one of them. White stains, yellow stains, brown stains that worry us without knowing very well the reason for their existence and, most importantly, how we can remove them.

Why do stains appear on teeth?

Yellow spotsNormally, the most common stains are yellow in colour. Why do these stains appear? Should we be worried?

Usually the yellowish colour is due to a deterioration of the enamel. In addition, it often leads to a marked increase in the sensitivity of our teeth to cold, heat and sweets.

If a yellow stain has appeared and you see that the edge of the tooth is translucent, it could be due to different reasons:

  • Acidic foods.
  • Bruxism
  • Brushing your teeth too aggressively.

On the other hand, we may find that the stains on our teeth are not yellow but have a brownish colour. These are usually caused by different reasons:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Coffee

All of them have a peculiarity: they alter the balance of the bacterial flora in the oral cavity and favour the formation of tartar plaque, which facilitates the formation of caries.

And finally, white spots. They are most commonly caused by decalcification of the tooth enamel and are often a warning sign of caries. What are the possible causes?

  • Problems in the formation of permanent teeth.
  • Inadequate cleaning during orthodontic treatment.

If we want to remove them, we must identify the source of the problem as the treatment will vary depending on the colour of the stains. So, as we always say, before doing anything, you should visit your dentist.
