What is mouthwash?
Mouthwash is a tool for maintaining optimal dental hygiene. It is an aqueous solution used to disinfect teeth and gums, prevent the formation of bacterial plaque and periodontal disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) and treat it when it exists.
Although it may seem a recent invention, we must go back centuries for the first references. Ancient civilisations made their own mouthwashes from medicinal plants to care for their teeth with what was available to them.
What is the purpose of dental mouthwash?
Its main use is to be the ideal complement to toothbrushing that leaves no trace of germs or bacteria that can cause damage to our mouth.
In addition, the frequent use of mouthwash has several advantages:
- Strengthen tooth enamel.
- To reduce inflammation of the gums.
- Prevent bleeding.
- Help with tooth sensitivity.
- Improve the breath for people with halitosis.
What is the composition of the mouthwash?
There are different types of mouthwashes depending on their composition and, above all, their intended use.
Mouthwashes with alcohol: highly antiseptic properties. Its use is not recommended for people with wounds or sores on the oral mucosa as it could aggravate their lesions.
Alcohol-free mouthwashes: mouthwashes based on cetylpyridine chloride (CPC), a component that eliminates the bacteria that cause dental plaque and helps to reduce gingivitis.
Fluoride mouthwashes: a type of mouthwash that does not remove plaque, but protects the tooth from the acids produced by plaque. The fluoride is integrated into the enamel that coats the teeth, helping to protect against caries in the most susceptible cases.
Chlorhexidine mouthwashes: to be used only when prescribed by a dentist. This type of mouthwash is especially indicated when there is periodontal disease or some kind of lesion.
However, it is advisable to consult a professional before using a mouthwash. At Udemax, after an in-depth examination, we will be able to recommend the mouthwash that best suits the teeth and needs of each patient.
