Gum problems in Palma de Mallorca

Periodontal diseases or gum problems are a group of diseases that affect the tissues that surround and support the teeth, i.e. the gum, the bone and the periodontal ligament. They are diseases caused by bacteria.

There are two main conditions: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is an inflammatory reaction of the gums. It is characterised by bleeding and a change in colour from a pale pink to a deep red gum colour. Gingivitis is the most common form of periodontal disease and occurs in all age groups. If gingivitis is not treated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which can already affect the bone that supports the tooth.

Periodontitis:

Periodontitis is usually the evolution of gingivitis, although not all periodontitis comes from gingivitis. Periodontitis does not affect all teeth equally.

Periodontitis is characterised by bleeding and also by the presence of changes in the colour, texture, and shape of the gums, receding gums with exposure of the dental root.

Untreated periodontitis will evolve into tooth mobility or suppuration, which can lead to tooth loss.

Periodontitis also affects the deep tissues. There is destruction of the bone and periodontal ligament, which are the tissues that support and hold the teeth.
