Oral care and systemic diseases. Alzheimer’s

This past week we woke up to the news that poor oral health and in particular the presence of some bacteria at inappropriate levels may be linked to the onset of mental illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease.

In a very interesting paper, researchers have detected toxic enzymes called gingipains in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

But, interestingly, they also found these gingipains in the brains of deceased people who were not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Until now, Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria and Alzheimer’s disease have been linked, but it was not known whether gum disease causes Alzheimer’s or whether it is dementia that leads to poor oral care.

The finding of these gingipains in people who were never diagnosed with Alzheimer’s may suggest that they could have developed the disease if they had lived longer.

The authors of the research claim that brain infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis is not the result of poor dental care after the onset of dementia or a consequence of the disease, but an early event that may explain the pathology found in middle-aged people before cognitive decline.

Therefore, as the UDEMAX GROUP advises, we should never stop paying attention to our oral-dental care, as it is increasingly proven that good oral-dental care can help prevent many diseases that affect the whole body.
