Tips for cleaning your baby’s first teeth

Some people may think that oral health is not something to pay attention to during our baby’s first years and that we can forget about it until the baby’s permanent teeth. WRONG!

At Clinicas Udemax we recommend that parents, even before the first tooth appears, carry out a series of tasks to take care of their children’s mouths. For example, we recommend that they clean the gingival rims (the mucous membranes) with a wet gauze a couple of times a day to keep the gums clean and free of bacteria for when the first teeth appear.

In addition, we strive to change acquired behaviours that we have normalised over the years. For example:

  • Avoid cleaning your child’s dummy with your mouth.
  • Do not dip the soother in sweets.
  • Avoid using sugar in the bottle as much as possible. A good alternative is to use soft teething rings and pre-cool them to relieve pain.

As for brushing, at Clinicas Udemax we always recommend that brushing should begin as soon as the first tooth appears.

During the first months and even years, it is obvious that it is the parents who will be in charge of brushing. Although the little ones should gradually get into the habit and acquire skills with the brush, it will always be the parents who will be in charge of going over each area.

Do you have to use toothpaste? Good question.

From about the age of two, we can introduce a small amount of toothpaste the size of a pea.

The European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry recommends that, between the ages of 6 months and two years, they should brush twice a day with a toothpaste containing 500ppm fluoride.

If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them at Clinicas Udemax.

Health always comes first.
