Is anaesthesia harmful when pregnant?

If you are pregnant and you are going to come to us at Clinicas Udemax, you can be calm and worry-free, as undergoing dental treatment that requires anaesthesia does not harm your condition.

A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), entitled “Pregnancy outcome after in utero exposure to local anesthetics as part of dental treatment”. It indicates that pregnant women should not have any concerns about undergoing a dental procedure that requires anaesthesia.

The research team led by Aharon Hagai, D.M.D., aimed to determine whether there was a significant risk associated withlocal anaesthetics used in dental treatment and pregnancy outcomes. No risk was found.

There were no differences in miscarriage rate, gestational age at delivery, or birth weight. The most common types of dental treatment were: endodontics (43%), exodontics (31%), and dental restorations (21%). Most women (63%) were not exposed to additional medications.

Research hasshown noevidence that dental treatment with anaesthesia causes harm during pregnancy. Despite this finding, many women do not visit a dentist when they are pregnant, either out of fear or because of poor advice from their gynaecologist.

However, at Clinicas Udemax, we evaluate each case on a personalised basis and educate pregnant women who attend our consultations so that they maintain proper oral hygiene and continue with the necessary treatments.

At Clinicas Udemax, we guarantee safety for you and your baby!
