Self-ligating and metal brackets

Types of brackets: how to choose the most suitable ones

With the return to school many parents decide that it is a good time to put their children’s dental health in order. It’s braces time and, unlike in the past when there was only one type of braces, now we have a wide range of options to choose from.

What is the best treatment, what types of brackets do we choose, etc.?

While a few years ago we only had metal brackets, nowadays we have more options. We tell you about it:

Metal brackets: these are normally the cheapest. In each of the brackets we will place a rubber band fixing the archwire so that it generates the necessary tension to move the teeth to the position the dentist considers necessary.

The small rubber bands are usually coloured and can be changed at every check-up. Although this may seem an unimportant detail, it often makes the process more tolerable for the little ones.

Aesthetic brackets: these are normally the brackets that most closely resemble the tooth, thus achieving a less aggressive image. They are differentiated by the type of material.

  • Sapphire: they are practically transparent.
  • Porcelain: they are very resistant and their colour is very similar to that of the teeth themselves.
  • Zirconium: they are white in colour and combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain.

Typically, the disadvantage of using cosmetic braces, apart from the fact that they can be more expensive, is that the treatment tends to last longer.

However, the best way to know which bracket is right for each of us is to consult with the orthodontist. For this reason, we invite you to make an appointment at the Udemax Group and, depending on your individual case, our orthodontists will give you a personalised and accurate diagnosis.
